Many Lake Macquarie residents experience the frustration of traffic bottlenecks at Speers Point every single day.
But, that could become a thing of the past after the NSW Government revealed it would spend $6 million to progress plans for an upgrade of the troublesome roundabout.
The amount complements the $5 million already secured in the 2022 Budget.
NSW Premier Chris Minns met with Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison and Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley on Friday to deliver the good news in person.
The government has been working with stakeholders, including Lake Macquarie City Council, to support the growth of the north-west area of the LGA.
“[Today] we came a step closer to a solution to congestion issues around Five Islands Road and TC Frith Avenue,” Mr Piper said.
“Improving transport movements in this major evolving area for the region is essential, with predicted increases of nearly 12,000 residents and 6,000 jobs over the next 20 years.
“So, we’ll need a safe and reliable road network, along with enhanced opportunities for people to walk, ride and use public transport.”
Mr Minns confirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading the busy intersection.
“We’ll begin to develop a range of proposals aimed at reducing congestion on Five Islands Road and TC Frith Avenue,” he said.
“These plans will then be presented to the community and other stakeholders, allowing them to provide feedback which Transport for NSW will use to refine and deliver the best possible outcome for all.
“We want to get more motorists home quicker by ensuring a smoother and safer journey.
“To highlight our dedication, this funding more than doubles the promises made by the former government.
“We’re keen to leave dithering commitments and empty vows of the past behind us.”
Ms Catley said the funding was an investment in the region’s future.
“It will ensure that the right infrastructure is in place to support growth in the Hunter,” she explained.
“We know the community has been desperate for an end to the frustrating and lengthy traffic delays at this bottleneck.
“So, this money will go a long way towards addressing that.”
Ms Aitchison agreed.
“We’re all aware the Speers Point roundabout is a local bottleneck, causing long delays during peak hours,” she said.
“The funding we’re providing [today] will allow Transport for NSW to examine the best way of improving the traffic flow around this key intersection.
“This could involve changes to the layout of the existing roundabout, adding traffic signals and may also include changes at surrounding intersections.
“Transport for NSW will also use this funding to develop cost estimates and schedules to help inform decision making about the project.”
