A police search for missing Beresfield man Raymond Peterson has ended in tragedy on Wednesday afternoon.

Following an extensive operation, which entered its third day, emergency services personnel found a body, believed to be the 85-year-old, about 12.30pm on 6 September.

Mr Peterson was last seen at 2pm on Monday 4 September.

When he could not be contacted or located, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were notified and began inquiries into his whereabouts.

A multi-agency search then took place with the assistance of Newcastle Police Rescue, NSW Police Divers, NSW SES, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the local community.

Sadly, his body was located near Anderson Drive, Beresfield.

“Police wish to thank the local community, particularly those residing within Beresfield, Tarro, Thornton, Woodberry, Hexham and Raymond Terrace, for assisting during the search,” Port Stephens-Hunter Police District duty officer Acting Inspector Timothy James said.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
