For Justin Lees, his latest solo exhibition is extremely personal.

The Newcastle visual artist will unveil I Saw Your Ghost Tonight at the Wester Gallery on Friday 4 August to pay homage to his late father, champion Hunter horse trainer Max Lees.

Sadly, this month, in 2023, marks the 20th anniversary of the mentor’s passing.

He enjoyed fabulous success with the likes of Luskin Star, County Tyrone, Fiammarosa, Snippts, Coronation Day, Flitter, Zephyrz, Chlorophyll and Ruffles, to name a handful.

Max Lees is the subject of son Justin Lees’ latest exhibition, I Saw Your Ghost Tonight.

Lees Snr trained the winner of the Coolmore Classic a staggering five times, along with the Golden Slipper Stakes, AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Champagne Stakes, Spring Champion Stakes, VRC Newmarket Handicap, VATC Oakleigh Plate and BATC Boomben 10,000 in his illustrious career.

“The whole exhibit is inspired by and a tribute to dad – who passed away on 26 August – and his life as a jockey, horse trainer and family man,” Justin said.

“But, I’m not only honouring my father, I’m creating a space of solace and reflection for all who encounter it.

I Saw Your Ghost Tonight serves as a reminder that memories and legacies endure, forever haunting the corners of our hearts, even in the face of loss.”

Through a diverse range of artistic mediums, Lees delves into the ethereal realm of memory, inviting viewers to embark on a contemplative journey that celebrates the enduring presence of his beloved dad.

He explores the intersections of grief, love and the power of recollection.

And, through his mixed media painting, he strives to capture the intangible essence of his father’s spirit, infusing each artwork with a palpable sense of nostalgia, longing and profound admiration.

“The title, I Saw Your Ghost Tonight, is a poetic representation of the fleeting encounters with the departed and the haunting presence that lingers within one’s thoughts,” Lees said.

“It evokes the moments when I sensed the ethereal presence of my dad, as if he were a spectral figure, whispering fragments of wisdom and love.”

Through visual storytelling, Lees brings to life the dynamic nature of his father’s world as a horse trainer in Newcastle.

Vibrant brushstrokes, evocative imagery and symbolic elements captivate the realm of thoroughbred racing… the majestic equine forms, the raw energy of the track, and the gritty beauty of the stables.

I Saw Your Ghost Tonight invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeply personal and emotional level,” he said.

“The textures, colours and symbolism woven into each piece encourage introspection and evoke dormant emotions.

“It’s through this intimate connection that I’m hoping to foster a shared experience, prompting contemplation on the universal themes of love, loss and the indomitable spirit of those who leave an indelible mark on our lives.”

The exhibition’s opening is scheduled to take place between 6pm and 8pm.

I Saw Your Ghost Tonight will then remain at the Wood Street, Newcastle West, gallery until 26 August, closing with a private event for family and friends, complete with a short documentary Lees worked on.

A self-published book is also available for pre-sale during the exhibit.
