Newcastle has once again hit national news, winning a “hole” heap of awards at the 2023 National Donut Competition.

The unique baker, whose home base is at The Junction, left its competition in a trail of icing sugar as it was crowned winner in three different categories.

Hosted by the Baking Association of Australia, the awards took place at the Queen Victoria Building Tea Rooms in Sydney on Wednesday 31 May.

The annual bake-off attracted entries from across the country, each presenting a delight for sweettooths.

DoughHeads boasts ‘big, dough energy’.

Newcastle was left on a sugar high after DoughHeads won best jam donut and best gourmet donut, second place for its original glazed doughnut, and overall Champion Donut in Show for its Caramilk Brulee Doughnut.

DoughHeads founder and creative director Anna Farthing says the accolades are a celebration of a brand that defines itself as the rebels of the doughnut industry.

“We’re on cloud nine with these epic wins,” she said.

“It’s a sweet victory for our dedicated team of doughnut warriors.

“We live and breathe doughnuts, and these awards are a tribute to our unwavering passion.

“We’re here to redefine the doughnut game.”

DoughHeads has a dozen doughnut flavours to choose from.

The much talked about Caramilk Brulee Doughnut won DoughHeads not only the top gong in the gourmet doughnut category, but also Champion Donut in Show.

The circular sweetie is filled with sweet caramilk custard, topped with toffee and then drizzled with caramilk chocolate.

DoughHeads’ jam doughnut was crowned the best in this category, with Ms Farthing describing it as a “jam-packed punch of deliciousness”.

“Delivering an explosion of flavour with [our] house made raspberry jam that had the judges weak at the knees.”

DoughHeads prides itself on creating “a doughnut journey like no other, where every bite is an explosion of flavour and every visit is a celebration of doughnut greatness”.

As a brand it is cheeky, claiming to reign supreme in the world of artisanal doughnuts and gelato.

“At DoughHeads, every dessert is a masterpiece, crafted with passion, to bring a dash of joy to your life,” says Ms Farthing.

*In case you were wondering: the correct dictionary-defined spelling of the sweet treat is ‘doughnut’, however the ‘Americanised’ version ‘donut’ has become commonplace since the 19th century.
